N.L. Folk Festival organizers confident event will thrive for 'years to come'

Despite postponing the final night due to heavy rain, organizers of the annual Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival say this year was a resounding success.

Folk Arts Society President John Drover said he has no regrets about moving Sunday night's performances to Monday, adding the change may have brought out even more people.

"It was really one of those magical nights in Bannerman Park last night," he told the St. John's Morning Show.

"I don't know the last time I saw that many lawn chairs. The weather was absolutely perfect."

'Roll of the dice'

Drover said he doesn't have official attendance numbers yet for this year, but is confident the festival is still going strong after 40 years in the city.

In a city where planning anything around the weather is always a gamble, he feels they've done well — thanks to dedicated staff and planners.

"We've had 40 festivals, which is 120 nights out in the St. John's weather, so it's roll of the dice really," he said.

"The fact that we can weather these storms shows the resilience of the festival. We're going to be there for many, many years to come, and I think we've just about got that plan nailed down."
