The Bay Arena in Bay Roberts will stay closed for longer than anticipated following a fire, and the hockey season will be extended as a result.

The Bay Arena Association said a contract has been awarded for repairs caused by an electrical fire on Dec. 18.

A staff member found the fire had started in the electrical panel in the refrigeration unit. (Submitted by Joyce Morgan)

Without any delays on repairs, the association said the arena should be ready for operation on Feb. 15.

It was initially thought the arena may be ready to open by the end of January.

To accommodate the ongoing repairs, the ice season will now be extended until the end of April.
