One of the busiest ice rinks in the province has been shut down following an electrical fire Friday morning.

An employee at the Bay Arena in Bay Roberts discovered that the electrical panel in the refrigeration room was on fire around 8 a.m.

The employee used an extinguisher to douse the fire, but arena manager Norm Hill says the panel was destroyed.

He says the regional arena could be closed for up to a month, affecting thousands of users throughout Conception Bay North.

Bay Arena opened 31 years ago and is home to junior hockey, minor hockey, figure skating and many more sports groups.

Hill said the facility was booked to capacity throughout the holiday period.

A staff member found the fire had started in the electrical panel in the refrigeration unit. (Submitted by Joyce Morgan)
