The mayor of Grand Falls-Windsor will wear the Liberal colours in the next general election.

Al Hawkins won the party's nomination on Monday night in the district of Grand Falls-Windsor-Green Bay South.

He defeated businessman Sean Cooper.

The party did not release results of the vote.

Although he is a Liberal, the governing Progressive Conservatives had appointed him to the boards of Nalcor Energy and other agencies, including Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro and Bull Arm Fabrication.

Hawkins has since resigned from those positions.

It is not clear how long Hawkins will remain as the mayor of Grand Falls-Windsor.

Grand Falls-Windsor-Green Bay South is currently represented by Tory Ray Hunter, who has been an MHA since 1999.
