A mother and son duo is dominating the golf scene in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

Sheshatshiu's Kanani Davis and her son Nikashantess Penashue are the respective women's and men's champions of Amaruk Golf Club's annual tournament.

"I was more excited for [my son] I think than I was for myself, because I always want him to do well," Davis told CBC's Labrador Morning.

Davis and her son began golfing at the same time several years ago, when Penashue was only eight. They were both quickly hooked and Penashue went on to win several golfing competitions in the province.

"She always travelled to provincials with me, we went together," said Penashue.

"This is the first time at our own golf course that we ended up winning together, so that was pretty special."

While his work at the Muskrat Falls construction site prevents him from playing much anymore, Penashue said he'd like to start training for bigger competitions again soon.

"I miss the game for sure," he said. "I miss the competition, that's what I miss the most about it. I'd love to get back to it."
