One person was killed after a car appeared to have driven off Pitts Memorial Drive, crashing nose-first on Richard Nolan Drive.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary says it was a 21-year-old man who died after the car he was driving nose-dived off Pitts Memorial Drive in Mount Pearl on Wednesday.

Police said the young man from Conception Bay South was driving eastbound, when his car left the road and ended up on its front end on Richard Nolan Drive, underneath the overpass. The vehicle then caught on fire.

A similar crash happened in the same area in early February, when a Jiffy Cab driver who was heading west on Pitts Memorial Drive left the road and dropped down below the overpass at the Southlands subdivision.

The driver was pulled to safely and was treated in hospital for serious injuries.

The RNC believe it's purely coincidence that the accidents happened in the same area.
