The $27-million state-of-the-art school was supposed to open in September, but it wasn't ready on time. Then the opening was rescheduled for last Friday, but got postponed again, due to the weather.

Students like Travis Flynn were excited to see the new school firsthand.

Flynn, who is in Grade 11, says he loves it —  everything from it being bright and colourful, to being full of new technology.

There's a new Mac computer lab, as well as fully-equipped metal, woodworking and mechanical shops — something for everyone, he said.

"We have a lot of new opportunities for students with the automotive and the shop departments so yeah … we have a lot more opportunities for students and that's the best part about this building."

The new school is located about nine kilometres outside the city, with no stores or restaurants within walking distance, but Grade 11 student Jana Giles says she doesn't mind not being downtown anymore.

"It's certainly going to be different, maybe sometimes harder, but we still have the cafeteria and there's going to be activities at lunch, and maybe it will bring the school closer together cause we're always going to be inside together and stuff," she said.

Giles says students may be in a new location, but the school spirit remains strong.

Principal Mike BeLong says it will take a while for students to get used to the new building, but the first day went pretty smoothly.
