This summer the STM will start replacing 24 escalators and repairing 39 others in its Metro network.
According to Montreal's public transit corporation, these escalators, many of which date back to the 1970s and '80s, have reached their life expectancy.
Work is already underway at the Jean-Talon Metro.
Work is expected to begin this summer on escalators in the Saint-Michel, Côte-des-Neiges, Édouard-Montpetit, De La Savane, Namur and Fabre stations — all on the Blue and Orange lines.
The transit authority said parts for older escalators are getting harder to find.
Work is expected to be finished by the end of 2018.
