This new riding merges the majority of the NDP-held Ahuntsic with the northern portion of the Liberal-held Saint-Laurent-Cartierville.

Ahuntsic

The former riding of Jeanne Sauvé — the first female cabinet member from Quebec, the first woman elected as Speaker of the House of Commons and the first woman to serve as Governor General — Ahuntsic has at one time been in the hands of each of the four major political parties in its 49 year history.

In 2011, Bloc Québécois MP Maria Mouriani, who had represented the riding since 2006, defeated the NDP candidate by 708 votes.

Two years later, the Bloc leader Daniel Paillé announced Mourani had been expelled from the caucus for criticizing Quebec's proposed secular charter. She later quit the party and crossed the floor to the NDP and is running under the New Democrat banner this election.

The Liberals are running star candidate Mélanie Joly, the dark horse in the 2013 Montreal mayoral race who came a close second to former Liberal MP Denis Coderre.

Saint-Laurent-Cartierville

This riding has been red since its creation in 1989.

Stephane Dion, who would later become leader of the Liberal Party and leader of the opposition, won his seat in this riding in a 1996 byelection after Shirley Maheu resigned to take a senate post. Dion will run this election in the redrawn riding of Saint-Laurent.
