The lawyer of a man who was mistakenly freed from a Montreal jail says he's afraid somebody could get hurt if his client doesn't turn himself in.

The lawyer of a man who was mistakenly freed from a Montreal jail is asking his client to turn himself in.

Francis Boucher, the son of Hells Angels leader Marice ‘Mom’ Boucher, walked out of jail on Monday, two months before the end of his sentence.

Boucher, 39, was serving a four-month sentence for uttering death threats against police officers.

Dimitrios Strapatsas, Boucher’s lawyer, told CBC he hasn’t spoken with his client since he was freed.

“I think he should surrender himself either to the closest police station, or contact either me or any other attorney, so he can present himself as quickly as possible to authorities,” Strapatsas said.

“My biggest concern is that he runs into an officer ... who is not properly trained, who panics because of his last name, and for some reason overreacts and somebody gets hurt.”

It's not clear whether Boucher's escape was the result of an administrative gaffe or an inside job.

Strapatsas said he believes Boucher was let out accidentally, but Quebec's public security minister, Lise Thériault, has said she thinks it looks more like a planned escape.

A jail guard has been suspended with pay while authorities investigate.

Boucher, a former member of the Rockers, a Hells affiliate, was previously sentenced to 10 years for gangsterism, conspiracy to commit murder and drug-trafficking.
