A jail guard has been suspended with pay pending an investigation into how the son of ex-Hells Angels kingpin Maurice (Mom) Boucher was able to walk out of jail two months before the end of his sentence.

While it still isn't clear whether Francis Boucher's escape on Monday was facilitated by an administrative gaffe or an inside job, Public Security Minister Lise Thériault says it appears to be the result of a "stratagem."

The 39-year-old Boucher was serving a 117-day sentence for having uttered death threats against police officers a jail term that was due to be completed at the end of May.

Boucher, a former member of the Rockers, a Hells affiliate, was previously sentenced to 10 years for gangsterism, conspiracy to commit murder and drug-trafficking.

Thériault is reiterating that Boucher's escape from Bordeaux jail is "inexcusable" and that the union representing prison guards is co-operating with the provincial police investigation.

Thierry Larivière, a spokesman for the labour group that represents the guards, confirmed the suspension and said the union wouldn't comment further.
