More snow to blanket northern Manitoba, cloudy and cold in south

The blanket of snow that has fallen on northern Manitoba is expected to get a lot thicker before Thursday is done.

Environment Canada has issued a winter storm warning for the Lynn Lake, Thompson, Flin Flon and Nelson House areas, which are likely to see 10-15 centimetres more snow today.

It's all part of a slow-moving low-pressure system that crawled into the province on Monday. However, the system is beginning to weaken and the heavy snow will finally diminish to light flurries by the evening, Environment Canada forecasts.

Areas at the north end of Manitoba's big lakes will probably avoid the snow but see huge amounts of rain instead, CBC meteorologist John Sauder said.

And if the rain and snow isn't enough, the wind — 40-69 km/h with gusts up to 80 km/h — are adding to the miserable conditions, Sauder said.

The weather in southern Manitoba won't be anywhere near as wretched, but it will be cold compared to earlier in the week.

On Monday, Winnipeg basked in a summer-like high of 26 C. On Thursday, the high is only expected to get to 8 C — and it likely won't get much better for a while.

The mix of occasional showers and windy, cool weather is with us for at least a few more days, Sauder said.

Winnipeg forecast

  • High 8 C.
  • Cloudy and windy with showers or a few flurries early in the morning.
  • Occasional showers through the day.
  • Wind southwest 30-50 km/h in the morning; west 30-50 km/h in the afternoon.
  • Cloudy with occasional showers tonight.
  • Low 2 C.

Normal temperatures for this time of year in Winnipeg are a daytime high of 13 C and an overnight low of 2 C.
