A number of communities in northern Manitoba are getting their first brush with winter weather today.

Thompson, Flin Flon, Nelson House, Split lake, Cranberry Portage and Lynn Lake are all under an Environment Canada snowfall warning.

"Most of the very nasty weather is on the north side of the low with huge amounts of rain across the north end of the lakes and wet snow farther north through Flin Flon, Lynn Lake and Thompson," said CBC meteorologist John Sauder.

The low pressure system is slow moving and centred over the Interlake region tracking to the northeast, he said.

There is no accumulating snow in Sauder's forecast for Winnipeg, yet.

Snowfall totals will be between 25 and 50 centimetres in the areas under warnings.

Shamattawa and Gillam are under a rain warnings Wednesday. Sauder said rainfall totals will be between 50 and 100 millimetres by Thursday morning.

"It's not just about the the rain and snow. The winds are gusty behind this system," Sauder added.

"Things start to settle down on Friday but the colder air is sinking south already and will last into the weekend."
