Man dead after early morning Winnipeg shooting Saturday

One of two men who were shot in an early morning shooting in Winnipeg Saturday has died.

Theodoros Belayneh, 32, was from Edmonton; 2nd man in stable condition

Theodoros Belayneh died after being shot Saturday morning.

One of two men who were hit in an early morning shooting in Winnipeg Saturday has died.

Theodoros Belayneh and another man were shot near Donald Street and Stradbrook Avenue Saturday around 3 a.m.

Both were taken to hospital in critical condition but Belayneh didn't survive. He was 32.

Winnipeg police say Belayneh was an Edmonton resident. 

​In 2014, Winnipeg police charged Belayneh and two other men with more than 45 weapons-related offences after two loaded .45 calibre handguns were found during a traffic stop near Corydon Avenue and Cockburn Street.

On Saturday after the shooting, a car with bullet holes through the front windshield was pulled over onto the side of the road in front of the Winnipeg Squash Racquet Club with its doors wide open. There was also glass on the ground surrounding the vehicle.

Two men are in critical condition after a shooting in Winnipeg near Stradbrook Avenue and Donald Street early Saturday morning.

Traffic was delayed for several hours Saturday as police sealed off the area to investigate the shooting.

Silas Keeper lives in the area and woke up to the sound of gunshots. 

"I woke up to a couple pops and that was it. You don't really see that around here," he said, adding that it's usually a quiet neighbourhood. 

"I just went back to bed, I didn't think anything of it."

When he heard it was gunshots, Keeper said he was a bit surprised. 

"For sure it was gunshots it was popping sounds and all that. [But] I thought it was just an accident," he said. 

Police say the second man hit in Saturday's shooting has been upgraded to stable condition.

The Winnipeg police homicide unit is investigating the shooting.
