A young woman fatally shot in a North End Winnipeg incident early Sunday has been identified by family members.

Tiffany Johnston, 21, is the 19th homicide victim in Winnipeg this year.

Officers and paramedics were called around 4:20 a.m. Sunday to 689 Selkirk Ave., where they found Johnston. She died in hospital.

According to police, Johnston was not the intended target. She was in the wrong place at the wrong time, visiting a home in the area.

She was walking from the front porch to the rear of the residence when she was shot, police said.

The house is known to police as a place where people with gang connections hang out but Const. Jason Michalyshen stresses that police have no information to suggest Johnston was in a gang.

Alan Trigwell, who lives a few doors away from the scene, said gunshots woke him up.

"I heard about four shots, then I heard people in the back lane saying they needed to call ambulance," said Trigwell.

There have been no arrests.
