An early morning shooting in Winnipeg's North End has claimed the life of a young woman, police said Sunday.

Officers and paramedics were called at about 4:20 a.m. CT to the 600 block of Selkirk Avenue, where they found a 21-year-old woman who had been shot.

She was taken to hospital in critical condition and died there.

Police didn't identify the woman or say if she was shot inside a home or on the street. However, forensic identification officers were seen searching the upstairs of a two-storey home at 689 Selkirk.

No other information was immediately available and no arrests have been made.

"This investigation is in its very early stage," Const. Natalie Aitken said in a statement.

Aitken is asking anyone with information to call homicide investigators at 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).

Dumas suffered extreme burns to his body and died in hospital Sept. 27. Police have said Dumas was attacked in the 500 block of Selkirk and set alight with an undisclosed liquid his assailant found on him.
