Ramie Brian Fontaine of Sagkeeng First Nation has been charged with criminal negligence causing death, careless use of a firearm, having an unregistered firearm, and possessing a firearm without a proper licence.

A 35-year-old man from Fort Alexander was shot in an area of Crown land about 45 kilometres north of the town of Powerview at about 2:30 a.m. on Thursday.

An RCMP investigation showed that two separate hunting parties were in the area and both parties were unaware of each other when the shooting occurred.

The victim, whose name has not been released, was in the area to retrieve two moose shot earlier that day while the second party was actively hunting, RCMP said.

Fontaine is currently being held in custody pending a court appearance on Jan. 11 in Winnipeg.
