A man who died at the Remand Centre Wednesday died after a struggle while in custody, the IIU said Thursday.

The man was involved in a altercation during a processing procedure early Wednesday morning, the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba wrote in a statement on Thursday. The man suffered a medical emergency and became unresponsive.

After the struggle, the man was transported to the Health Sciences Centre by ambulance and died in hospital, the statement says.

The IIU said investigators attended the scene immediately, and a request will be made for a civilian monitor as required by law.

No further details are available because the investigation is ongoing, the IIU said.
