2 charged with 1st-degree murder after man viciously beaten
Man from Edmonton, another from Vancouver face charges
Two men face first-degree murder charges after a 29-year-old man died following a beating that lasted much of Sunday in an apartment in Winnipeg's Fort Richmond neighbourhood.
Police identified the victim as Winnipegger Mustafa Peyawary on Tuesday. Police said he was viciously assaulted and had signs of massive blunt-force trauma. They believe he was assaulted over an extended period of time.
Const. Tammy Skrabek said the beating likely lasted "the better part of the day."
Peyawary was found after neighbours heard screaming, police said.
"They did hear a fair amount of yelling and screaming for some period of time prior to notifying police," Skrabek said Monday.
Police arrived at the apartment block on Killarney Avenue within two minutes of the call at about 10 p.m. on Sunday, Skrabek said.
Neither Peyawary nor the suspects lived there, they said.
They found Peyawary inside, unresponsive and not breathing.
Damir Kulic, 27, of Vancouver, and Ahamed Althaaf Ismail, 29, of Edmonton, have been charged with first-degree murder.
"In this case, with charges of first-degree murder, it's not believed it's a random attack. They are here for a purpose," Skrabek said.
"What their motivation was we don't know exactly."
