A 29-year-old man was killed by a vicious assault at an apartment building on Killarney Avenue in Winnipeg's Fort Richmond neighbourhood on Sunday night, Winnipeg police say.

The man was dead when police found him around 10 p.m. after neighbours reported hearing an assault, Const. Tammy Skrabek told reporters Monday.

Several witnesses and suspects are in custody being interviewed by police, she said. Based on their accounts so far, the attack that led to the man's death was "somewhat vicious," Skrabek said.

"They did hear a fair amount of yelling and screaming for some period of time prior to notifying police," she said.

Investigators are still working on figuring out how exactly the man died.

It's the 20th homicide in Winnipeg this year. Last year, there were a total of 24 homicides over the entire year.

While the crime rate is concerning and taxes homicide detectives, it shouldn't alarm the general public, Skrabek said.

"If we look at who the victims were and who some of the arrests were, a large portion of it is gang related and is criminal organization related," she said.

"We're not seeing some spur-of-the-moment attacks on people."
