A woman reported missing last week has been found dead in Winnipeg's North End.

The body of Simone Sanderson, 23, was found behind a building at Burrows Avenue and Main Street on Sunday.

Her grandmother, Betty-Ann Sanderson, says Simone was a kind person and the two of them had a good relationship.

Sanderson said Simone was distraught because she was trying to regain custody of her infant son. "She couldn't do anything to get the baby back. We tried really hard to get the baby back but they wouldn't release the baby. She didn't know what to do."

Sanderson said she received a visit from police investigators around 1:30 a.m. Monday, informing her that the body of her grand-daughter had been found.

Police said Monday they would release no further details as an investigation is underway.

Sanderson was reported missing last week after disappearing Aug. 26 and police said they were concerned about her well-being.

An autopsy is scheduled Tuesday.
