Winnipeg police closed Burrows Avenue east of Main Street to traffic on Sunday to investigate what they are describing as "suspicious circumstances."

Police spokesman Const. Jason Michalyshen confirmed that part of Burrows Avenue was closed at about 2:20 p.m. CT. Sunday. All eastbound traffic has been blocked as a result.

However, Michalyshen did not explain why the street has been shut down, except to say an investigation into "suspicious circumstances" is in its early stages.

Members of the police service's forensic identification unit are in the area.

One witness told CBC News he saw the body of a woman at the scene. However, police have not confirmed any details at this time.

Police would not release any further information about the investigation on Sunday, Michalyshen said in a release.
