Body of missing canoeist found in St. Thomas lake after day-long search
Emergency crews were called in to search after a canoe tipped Monday morning
The body of a 26-year-old man has been found after an extensive search that started Monday morning in Lake Margaret in St. Thomas.
Divers from the OPP's Underwater Search and Rescue Unit were called to the lake after reports were received that a canoe carrying three adults had capsized shortly after 8 a.m.
Ryan Davies, of Port Stanley, was identified by police as the victim of the boating accident. His two paddling companions were treated in hospital and were said to be in stable condition.
"The St. Thomas Police Service would like to thank our community for their support and assistance as we navigated today's incident which has resulted in the recovery of the missing individual. Our thoughts remain with the families involved," wrote police spokesperson Samantha Wakefield, shortly after 8:30 p.m..
Across the day, approximately 30 people from various search and rescue units were involved in combing the lake, including the fire service and EMS.
The area's walking and biking trails, and paths in and around the lake, were closed on Monday to allow for the search.
