The provincial police watchdog is investigating after a man fell from a balcony as officers were responding to an apartment unit to check on him Thursday afternoon.

Officers showed up to an apartment building on Pomeroy Lane just before 1 p.m. to apprehend a man under the Mental Health Act, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said in a statement. Police were concerned for the man's safety, London Police said.

"Two officers knocked on the door and attempted to make contact. The man fell from the balcony to the ground below," the SIU said.

Residents in the area confirmed with CBC Friday morning that a man fell from the fifth floor of 3040 Pomeroy Lane.

Officers performed CPR and called paramedics, but the man died in hospital.

The SIU probes incidents in which someone is hurt or killed during an interaction with police.
