Oneida Nation of the Thames, located southwest of London, sent a notice to residents Thursday, asking them to cut their water consumption.

In order to ensure a continuous supply of water, Oneida officials have issued a conserve water alert.

"It's when we experience extreme weather conditions and everyone's consumption peaks at once, that adequate supply for emergencies is jeopardized," said Rob Cornelius, the manager of Oneida Public Works' water department, in the letter to residents.

The notice asks residents to limit water consumption by:

  • Minimizing laundry washing by washing full loads only
  • Washing dishes once a day
  • Limiting time water is left running
  • Fixing or plugging leaky pipes
  • Keeping showers to five minutes or less, and taking fewer baths

CBC News has reached out to Oneida officials for more information.
