Automotive News Canada journalist Greg Layson thinks union workers are in a strong position to negotiate with GM, thanks in part to strong sales of the Chevrolet Equinox.

Workers at General Motors' CAMI plant in Ingersoll are on strike over job security concerns and future investment.

Unifor, the union representing auto workers, is looking for a commitment from the auto maker that designates the CAMI plant as the lead producer of the Chevrolet Equinox.

In an interview with CBC Radio's Afternoon Drive, Automotive News Canada journalist Greg Layson said Unifor might have the upper hand.

"Unifor is in a pretty strong position right now," Layson told host Chris dela Torre.

"(GM) invested $800 million in the plant for this new vehicle, (and) it's one of the hottest selling vehicles in North America. So if you're Unifor, it seems like you've got a lot of cards to play and that you've backed GM into a corner."
