The province has named Dr. Javeed Sukhera, a Western University professor of psychiatry, to the London Police Services Board.

Sukhera's appointment was announced Tuesday and fills one of two provincial vacancies on the city's civilian police oversight board.

It also comes four months after the resignation of former vice-chair Michael Deeb, the embattled high school principal who stepped down in December 2017 following an investigation into his conduct. It was in connection with allegations he abused his power by pursuing a romantic relationship with London teacher and poet Najwa Zabian.

Sukhera, who is also a child and adolescent psychiatrist at London Health Science Centre, focuses his research on reducing the stigma around mental illness.

Sukera will be sworn in on May 3 and will attend his first board meeting on May 17.
