Hey London! It's hot and there's another heat warning
The Middlesex-London Health Unit issued a heat warning on Thursday morning to last until Monday
If you think it was warm this past week, just wait for Friday and Saturday.
Environment Canada is expecting a record-setting temperature of 34 degrees on Friday with a humidex somewhere in the low to mid 40s.
The last time it was this hot on that day was in 1946 when the temperature reached 33.9 degrees.
On Saturday, the weather is expected to reach a high of 32 degrees and feel close to 40 degrees.
The Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) issued a heat warning on Thursday morning which is expected to last until Monday.
How camps are coping
A heat warning is issued when day temperatures reach 31 degrees and evening temperatures don't drop below 20 degrees for two days.
If that's the case for more than two days, then officials would issue an extended heat warning.
That could be the case this weekend, according to Randy Walker, a public health inspector with the local health unit's environmental health team.
"It's beautiful weather and it's wonderful to be outside, but like anything, in moderation," he said.
Parents of children attending Storybook Summer Camp have been given the option to keep their children at home and receive a credit of $35.
Other city-run camps are not offering reimbursements. However, officials said they will be altering programs to allow for heat relief activities and breaks.
Laurie Quinlan, manager of recreation programming and leadership at the City of London, said city-run camps have implemented a hot weather program.
"We make sure that staff and kids are having an adequate intake of water. We make sure they have access to shade and air conditioned spaces. And we make sure out staff have appropriate rest breaks," she said.
"As the [humidex ratings] increase, the amount of time they have relief from the sun increases as well," she added.
She said officials will monitor temperatures on an hourly basis.
