Students at a high school in Ingersoll saw their day cut short Friday when a fire broke out inside the building.

Firefighters were called to Ingersoll District Collegiate Institute on Alma Street around 10 a.m. after calls of smoke came in.

School officials with the Thames Valley District School Board said a fire was extinguished, but restoration crews remained on the scene to assess the damage and air out the building. The board said classes were cancelled for the rest of the day.

Students and staff were sent to the local arena to wait for parents and guardians to pick them up or to wait for buses, which will leave at regular time from the arena.

The extent of the damage is not yet known. CBC News has requested comments from fire and school officials and will update this story when it becomes available.

School officials said classes will resume as scheduled on Monday morning unless parents hear otherwise.
