Another death linked to UH outbreak as London region reports 53 new COVID cases

What's the latest? 

The Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) reported 53 additional cases of COVID-19 Tuesday, matching Monday's case count, which is the highest since the pandemic began.

There were 34 recoveries, making the number of known active cases in the region 318. London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) reported one death in connection to an outbreak at University Hospital, where 16 people have now died.

Following two days of no new cases, LHSC reported three new cases among staff at University Hospital. There are now 77 patients and 82 staff or health care providers who have contracted COVID-19 since the outbreaks began on Nov. 10.

The majority of the new cases in Middlesex-London were among people in their 20s and under, totalling 27. There were 23 cases among people between 30 and 79, and three more involving people over 80 reported today.

There are four new cases involving residents at long-term care homes in the region since Monday, with an active outbreak at Chelsey Park.

COVID-19 across the region and beyond

Southwestern Public Health, which includes Woodstock, Ingersoll and St. Thomas, reported 15 new COVID-19 cases Tuesday, bring the number of known active cases to 128.

Windsor continues to grapple with climbing cases, as 136 new infections were posted Tuesday. The region is now considering asking patients to call their own contacts as they deal with a backlog of more than 500 waiting for a response from the health unit.

There are now 837 known active cases of the virus in the region along with 24 active outbreaks.

Meanwhile, there were a record 2,275 new cases of COVID-19 province-wide Tuesday, along with 20 more deaths.
