London and its neighbouring counties continue to see low COVID-19 numbers but travel two hours west and the number of positive cases is surging.

Leamington and Kingsville, both areas within the Windsor-Essex health unit, contributed to that health unit reporting 177 new cases Monday.

Compare that to Middlesex-London, where only three new cases were reported. Oxford, Elgin and Huron-Perth counties, as well as St. Thomas, reported no new cases.

The situation in Windsor-Essex is due in part to targeted testing of migrant workers this past weekend. Mobile clinics are visiting farms in the area where migrant workers lined up to be swabbed.

Three seasonal workers have died in Ontario since the outbreak began, including Juan Lopez Chaparro. He was remembered Sunday in Norfolk County during a memorial service that was streamed to his Mexican family and into the bunkhouses on the farm where he worked.

The number of patients in Ontario hospitals with confirmed infections of the novel coronavirus increased by 18, up to 232. At the peak of the outbreak, more than 1,000 people with the illness were hospitalized.

Meanwhile, those requiring intensive care fell by five, down to 46, and the number on ventilators dropped by 1 to 35.

While the spread on southwestern Ontario farms is contributing to high provincial numbers, so too is an outbreak at a nail salon in Kingston.

The province reported 257 new cases Monday, with 25 linked to the salon.
