2023 trial date set for accused in killing of Muslim family in London, Ont.

Nathaniel Veltman, 21, will stand trial for the alleged killing of four members of a Muslim family in London last summer, along with the attempted murder of a child, starting Sept. 5, 2023.

The man accused of killing four members of a Muslim family in London, Ont., last summer will stand trial in September 2023.

Nathaniel Veltman, 21, is facing four counts of first-degree murder, one count of attempted murder, and associated terrorism charges after allegedly striking a family with his truck on June 6, 2021. He has not entered a plea.

Four members of the Afzaal family were killed while they stood on the sidewalk at the intersection of Hyde Park Road and South Carriage Road. They were out for an evening stroll. 

Salman Afzaal, 46, his 44-year-old wife, Madiha Salman, their 15-year-old daughter, Yumna, and her 74-year-old grandmother, Talat Afzaal, were killed. The couple's nine-year-old son was seriously hurt but survived.

London police have called the attack a hate-motivated crime.

Veltman's trial begins on Sept. 5, 2023, with 12 weeks set aside for the proceedings. The trial will be presided by Justice Renee M. Pomerance.
