Fire at Centre Wellington sawmill suspicious, police say

Police are investigating an early morning blaze at a sawmill near Fergus, Ont., which the force says is suspicious. It comes after three abandoned houses in the area were set ablaze in October.

An early morning fire at a sawmill east of Fergus, Ont., is being treated as suspicious, officials say.

Fire crews were called to the sawmill on Sixth Line, just north of Wellington Road 22 in Centre Wellington at 2 a.m. Wednesday after reports of a fire.

Pallets of hardwood were destroyed in the fire.

There were no injuries.

The OPP and the Ontario Fire Marshal are investigating the fire, which police called "suspicious."

Abandoned house fires

It is another in a string of recent fires in the area.

Three abandoned houses have gone up in flames in the past month.

The first abandoned house fire was reported on Oct.14 on Third Line. Less than a week later on Oct.19, a second abandoned house fire was also reported on Third Line, less than a kilometre away. A third was reported Oct. 28 on Arkell Road.

Puslinch Fire and Rescue Services Chief Steve Goode said those house fires are being treated as arson.

"There are no other factors that could cause such a house to erupt in flames. There is no hydro to it, it's not occupied so that eliminates many things," Goode said. "Lightning was not existent at the time."
