Temperatures set to soar in and around Waterloo region, Environment Canada warns
Temperatures over 30 C expected with cooler air arriving Thursday
Temperatures are set to soar over the next two days in southwestern Ontario, prompting Environment Canada to issue a heat warning for Waterloo region, Guelph and Wellington County for Tuesday and Wednesday.
The weather agency says both days will see a forecasted high of 32 C, but humidity will make it feel like 40 C.
The UV index will be 10, which is considered very high.
The overnight hours "will provide little relief from the heat" as temperature remain in the low 20s, the heat warning said.
Cooler air is expected in the area on Thursday, when the forecasted high is 27 C.
The Region of Waterloo reminded residents that many municipal buildings, libraries, community centres and malls can be used as cooling centres during heat events. Locations can be found on the region's website.
In Guelph, the cooling centres are:
- Emergency shelter at 23 Gordon St., open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- Royal City Mission at 50 Quebec St., open 12 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
- Guelph City Hall at 1 Carden St., open 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- Guelph Public Library branches (except West End Community Centre), open 9 a.m.to 8 p.m.
Environment Canada said people should be aware of the following:
- Hot and humid air can mean deteriorating air quality.
- Risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors.
- People and/or pets shouldn't be left inside a parked vehicle.
- When it's hot: eat cool, light meals.
- Outdoor workers should take regularly scheduled breaks in a cool place.
