Hamilton police chief to attend fallen officer's funeral in Guelph

Chief Glenn De Caire and a delegation of Hamilton officers will pay their respects in Guelph Thursday.

Hamilton's police chief and a delegation of officers will travel to Guelph Thursday to pay respects to fallen officer Jennifer Kovach.

"Officers will attend the funeral to show our support for those members of the Guelph Police Service as well as for the friends and family of [Constable] Jennifer Kovach," said Sgt. Debbie McGreal, spokesperson for Hamilton police.

Kovach, 26, was killed last Thursday while on duty after an early morning collision with a city bus. Guelph police said she lost control of her cruiser, crossed the median and hit the bus head-on.

McGreal said she and a number of local officers will attend, along with Chief Glenn De Caire and his executive officer.

A bus for officers will travel from Hamilton's police headquarters to Guelph, and others may travel on their own.

"Everyone wants to go, it's just a matter of continuing the work we do in Hamilton," McGreal said. "We feel strongly about being there."

The motorcade will begin at 10 a.m. at the Guelph Police Service headquarters and end at the Sleeman Centre in the city's downtown core where a public memorial begins at 11:30 a.m.
