Thousands expected at funeral for Guelph police officer
'Enhanced' police presence expected to deal with large crowds, chief says
Over 6,000 people are expected to attend the public funeral service for Guelph Police Constable Jennifer Kovach who was killed in the line of duty last week.
The police procession will begin at 10:00am and proceed through downtown Guelph to the Sleeman Centre, where the funeral is set to begin at 11:30 a.m.
Investigators believe 26-year-old Const. Jennifer Kovach lost control of her cruiser at about 12:30 a.m. on March 14 before her car crossed the median line and slammed head-on into a transit bus.
Guelph Police Chief Bryan Larkin said his service has been given extra resources with support and staffing from Guelph Emergency Services, the City of Guelph and the Toronto Police Service in order to plan and coordinate such a large public event.
Police release new details in fatal crash
Meanwhile, new details were released about last Thursday's fatal crash.
Guelph Police believe Kovach lost control of her cruiser while responding to a call, before her car crossed the middle line and slammed head-on into a public transit bus at around 12:30 a.m. Thursday March 14th.
Police Chief Bryan Larkin said Kovach was responding to a call for assistance for a drug seizure at the time of the crash and that she was responding in order to help a a fellow officer deal with an uncooperative suspect, but Larkin also said the exact cause of Kovach's fatal crash would not be available for sometime.
"Right now, the focus is on Jennifer Kovach and celebrating her life," he said. "Once we finish this enormous task we will come back to updating the community on this fatal collision."
