Valley Line LRT a go after Ottawa kicks in $150 million
Edmonton has finally received the $150 million in federal funding for the southeast LRT expansion that council was hoping for.
Federal cabinet minister Rona Ambrose made the announcement at the South Campus LRT station on Monday along with Mayor Don Iveson and Transportation Minister Wayne Drysdale.
Iveson said the funding announcement means the project can now be put out to tender.
“The federal funding is secured, the provincial funding is secured, the city funding has long been in place,” he said. “We have the whole package.”
The $1.8 billion southeast expansion or Valley Line will take trains from Mill Woods to downtown Edmonton.
The city is contributing $1 billion of the cost. Monday’s announcement brings Ottawa’s contribution to $400 million.
The Alberta government has earmarked $250 million over three years to the Valley Line and said back in March that it would match the $150 million in federal dollars.
