Speed limits in school zones will drop to 30 km/h

The City’s Transportation Committee has approved a plan that will see speed limits in elementary school zones changing this September.

New speed limit will take effect in September 2014

The City’s Transportation Committee has approved a plan that will see speed limits in school zones changing this September.

Speed limits will be reduced to 30 km/hour around all Edmonton schools with elementary grades.

In addition to lowering the speed limit, the city will also be chipping in about $500,000 to pay for enforcement in the school zones.

As a positive side effect, Mayor Don Iveson said having more enforcement officers around may help limit other bad driving behaviours such as u-turns and parents dropping children off mid-street in school zones.

Coun. Bryan Anderson agreed, saying that enforcement is the key to improving safety.

The additional funds slated to help cover enforcement costs will come from money the city earns from photo radar ticketing.
