Sinkhole closes downtown street

A sinkhole caused by a water main break closed a downtown street Monday.

A sinkhole caused by a water main break closed a downtown street Monday.

The section of 116th Street between Jasper and 102nd Avenue was closed after the city received calls from residents that a sinkhole had developed on the road.

"We had a watermain break that occurred Sunday afternoon around 5 p.m. that weakened the base structure of the road and the foundation of it," said Ben Mittelsteadt, who speaks for the city's transportation department. "And that's how sinkholes are created."

Crews from EPCOR were on site Monday to assess the damage.

Mittelsteadt expects it will take a week to repair the road.
