Police searching for suspect after officer injured in altercation near Eskimos game
A suspect allegedly rammed his car into a police vehicle at a routine check point near the Eskimos game
Edmonton police are searching for a suspect who rammed his car into a police vehicle and then fought with an officer who was posted at a traffic blockade for an Edmonton Eskimos game on Saturday night.
The officer was sent to hospital, but is "doing OK," said EPS spokesman Scott Pattison at a news conference late Saturday night.
He did not specify the nature of the officer's injuries. He said there was no risk to the public, despite the manhunt underway.
The incident occurred around 8:15 p.m. in the area of 107A Avenue and 92nd Street, just south of Commonwealth Stadium. Pattison said the officer was working at a routine traffic blockade when his vehicle was rammed and then an "altercation ensued" with the suspect.
Police cordoned off several blocks near a defunct grocery store and a liquor store at the intersection. Behind the police tape, a white Chevrolet Malibu with damage to the front hood, was stopped late Saturday night next to a toppled traffic barricade. The Malibu and the police vehicle were hood-to-hood.
A police hat lay on the ground next to the vehicles.
About a dozen police vehicles were at the scene Saturday night.
Pattison warned Edmonton Eskimos game-goers they may not be able to access their cars if parked in the area and transit riders were also warned they could face disruptions following the game.
