A 50-year old man from Edmonton has been charged with aggravated sexual assault for failing to tell his sex partner that he was infected with HIV, RCMP said Wednesday.

A 50-year old man from Edmonton has been charged with aggravated sexual assault for failing to tell his sex partner that he was infected with HIV, RCMP said Wednesday.

RCMP say a woman went to Edmonton city police at the end of March to complain about a man and a sexual encounter with him that had taken place in the Leduc area. The investigation was then turned over the RCMP, who then arrested and questioned him.

"After our investigation, we do believe he is infected with the HIV virus and that he was aware of this at the time he had intercourse with this woman," said RCMP Const. Jodi Heidinger.

The man is out on bail and is scheduled to return to court in March 2011.

RCMP are not releasing the name of the accused, his relationship with the complainant  nor any other details in order to protect her identity.
