The standardized tests had been dropped 10 years earlier, but the decision left some worried that some students were being left behind.
As described by CBC reporter Eve Savory, the 1983 announcement was met with a mix of optimism and hesitation by school staff and students, alike.
Now known as diploma exams, the tradition of cramming has continued to today with just one major change: starting this year, the exams will be worth only 30 per cent of students' grades rather than 50 per cent.
