Imperial Oil refinery fire under investigation
No one was injured in Thursday morning incident
The cause of a fire that broke out outside the Imperial Oil refinery in east Edmonton remains under investigation.
Officials with Imperial Oil said the "small fire" began at the asphalt loading area on the eastern side of the Strathcona Refinery property early Thursday morning.
The fire was quickly extinguished and the all-clear given to resume operations was given at 7 a.m.
No one was injured in the incident.
J.C. Goddard lives in the Beverly neighbourhood, just north of the refinery.
He was getting ready for work, shortly after 5:30 a.m, when he heard a troubling thud.
"I'm sitting here on my couch, and it sounded like one of my dogs had jumped in the bedroom, but then my front window started to rattle," Goddard said in an interview with CBC News.
"And then very shortly after that, the horns, which sound like fog horns, went off rather rather quickly and they went off for about two minutes.
"It was enough to rattle the front windows, and I have big front windows, and I said, 'Okay. That's not normal.'"
The company said it has notified Strathcona County emergency response and the community of the emergency.
Imperial Oil said it does not anticipate the incident will affect site operations.
