One dead in four-vehicle highway crash west of Hinton

RCMP are investigating a four-vehicle collision Monday night that temporarily closed a major highway and left one person dead and multiple people injured.

RCMP are investigating a four-vehicle collision west of Hinton Monday that left one person dead and five people injured. 

Both east and westbound lanes of Highway 16, about 18 kilometres west of Hinton, were closed for several hours as RCMP investigated the crash. 

The highway opened to one-lane alternating traffic around 6 a.m. Tuesday, RCMP said. 

The collision occurred around 5:40 p.m. Monday at the intersection of Wildhorse Lake Campground turnoff on Highway 16 and involved a car, two SUVs and a semi-tractor trailer unit, RCMP said.

The driver of one of the SUVs died at the scene, RCMP said.

Three other passengers from the same SUV were taken to hospital with serious injuries, including some who were transported by STARS Air Ambulance.

Two people in the second SUV were injured, one of whom was taken to hospital. The people in the car were not injured, RCMP said.

Police did not say if there were any injuries to the driver of the semi-tractor trailer unit.
