An Alberta women's organization says the federal government is neglecting the needs of aboriginal victims of domestic abuse.
The Alberta Council of Women's Shelters is calling on Ottawa to provide more support to shelters on reserves. Unlike other shelters that are funded by the province, those serving reserves are paid for by the federal government.
Jan Reimer, provincial co-ordinator with the council, says the current funding just isn't enough.
"I think it's just been neglect for many years. We've drawn this to the attention of the minister of aboriginal affairs federally. And [it] doesn't seem to get much of a response."
Reimer says aboriginal women make up a high percentage of people seeking help in shelters in Alberta.
