Edmonton pups enjoyed a little more freedom than usual on Sunday. The pooches gained access to both the Jamie Platz Family YMCA pool and Hawrelak Park.

It was a dog day afternoon in Edmonton.

Pooches got the go-ahead to splash and stroll in places usually reserved for humans. Dogs were welcomed, fur and all, to the Jamie Platz Family YMCA for a Doggie Dip.

Hundreds of pups, big and small, took a swim in the pool before it was due to be drained for the year. Many were naturals at the doggie paddle, but some needed a little more help.

Across town at Hawrelak Park, dogs, ferrets, parrots, and more were welcomed. Animals usually get the boot from the park, but for one day a year they get their own festival to make up for it.

Pets in the Park is a yearly event that gives animals and their owners a full day of activities. It's the biggest fundraiser of the year for the Edmonton Humane Society. Money raised in events like dunk for hot dogs, and obstacles courses, goes back to the shelter.
