Crews battle wildfire near Banff National Park border

Firefighters are trying to contain a forest fire approximately 50 kilometres west of Nordegg near the Banff National Park border.

Firefighters are trying to contain a forest fire approximately 50 kilometres west of Nordegg near the Banff National Park border.

The blaze was caused by a lightning strike and is being held at 1585 hectares. 

Environment and Sustainable Resources Development had 12 firefighters and four helicopters on the scene trying to manage the wildfire. Wildlife specialists have reinforced natural barriers to contain the fire. 

Crews will also be conducting controlled burning east of the fire to help contain it from spreading further. 

Alberta Transportation has closed Highway 11 from Whirpool Point to the National Parks gate as a safety precaution.
