For Canada's women's hockey player and St. Albert native Meaghan Mikkelson, playing at Rogers Place in Edmonton is a dream come true.

Mikkelson and her teammates will face off the United States Sunday night at 5 p.m. in the last game of a six-game exhibition series.

Mikkelson, who plays defence, is looking forward to the Edmonton crowd feeding the team's energy on the ice.

"Growing up and going to Oilers games, watching the Oilers and now having the opportunity to wear the maple leaf and play against our rivals, the Americans, in Rogers Place is very very special," she said.

This will be the first time the national women's hockey team has played at Rogers Place.

Canada and the United States have played against each other in both countries as part of this pre-Olympic series. The most recent game was on Dec. 15 in San Jose, Calif.

Preparing for the Olympics

Sunday night's game between the two countries will be the last before the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Canada's coach, Laura Schuler, says the team is using this exhibition series to prepare.

"Right now we're really happy with the steps that we're taking and the progress that we continue to make," Schuler said Sunday.

Team officials have until Jan. 21 to choose the 2018 Winter Olympics team roster that will be heading to South Korea.
