A father from Bonnyville faces child pornography charges for distributing a nude photo of his own nine-year-old daughter.

The 35-year-old was arrested on April 6th after an investigation by ALERT's Internet Child Exploitation unit.

The investigation started in September, 2015 after ALERT received information from both RCMP in British Columbia and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation in the United States.

ALERT said the accused shared and distributed child pornography online, and at least one photo included his young daughter.

"The reality is that these offences do occur more frequently than many realize," said Staff Sgt. Luis Gandolfi of the Bonnyville RCMP. "Small towns are not immune to this problem."

The accused's name has not been released to protect the identity of the victim. His family is receiving support from Child and Family Services and the Zebra Child Protection Centre.

The accused faces six charges:

  • Two counts of accessing child pornography;
  • Two counts of distributing child pornography;
  • One count of possessing child pornography;
  • One count of making child pornography.

ALERT is an integrated team made up of Edmonton police and RCMP members.
