Five teenage boys aged 12 to 19 are facing several charges after an Edmonton taxi driver was robbed of his cash and his cab early Wednesday morning, police say.

Police said the suspects got out of a truck near 79th Street and 90th Avenue before approaching the taxi around 1 a.m. Once the theft was reported the police helicopter followed the stolen taxi until police were able to lay down a spike belt.

The taxi swerved off the road and hit a lamp post. Police said four boys ran from the vehicle, while a fifth stayed inside the vehicle with a leg injury.

Police believe the truck was also stolen.

Police haven’t released details about the charges.
